From way back in the days during the marriage from which I am now freed, we once had enough money from an inheritance to actually be invested. Many poorly informed decisions decreased its value over time. Nevertheless, we had a lovely investment counselor at the bank who had become someone to share personal stories with and laugh together over family quirks. It has never become the type of friendship that means going out for coffee and muffins or any other type of socializing, yet, I value her and stopped in to see her one day last week.
We caught up with much of the pertinent chapters in our respective stories, and in so doing, she confided that her husband had endured several layoffs in recent years.
He had obtained significant help from an agency called
WorkforceOne and she recommended I seek them out to see what they could do to help me become lucratively re-employed.
And so, that is how I got there. I found an office about five miles or so away and spent an afternoon talking to various staff members there. As it turns out, they are a government-run employment agency. One nice gentleman helped me sign up and gave me an assortment of papers and pamphlets to help me in this transitionary period.
Most of these papers will find their way into the recycle bin, but several have important contact information on them.
After the weekend passed, I spent a day on their website creating my profile. Next step will be to upload my resume so I can begin to answer some of their job postings. Interestingly, they also offer assorted classes and seminars which I plan to visit next week.
The next day, I spent on the phone, calling government agencies. As it works out, I am still not eligible for unemployment compensation because to qualify you have to have six months of steady reported income in the State rather than just a calendar quarter.
So no help at all in that avenue.
And so, its time to fall back and punt.
I will not return to the telemarketing place. I have to maintain my standards and my ethics.
You know, you may have seen the movie or read the books called, The Secret. It has received both great acclaim and sharp criticism. I fully subscribe to that outlook it portrays, that we have the ability to control our situation through positive affirmations and visioning. I also firmly believe that it takes more than that. Mr. Canfield of the Chicken Soup book series has achieved great success through the principles described in that film. It fails to fully express all the other factors that led to that success. there is a four-letter word involved. W-O-R-K. The movie and book seem to take a lot for granted and leaved many people with the impression that all they have to do is sit around and imagine their desired success.
Sorry, it's not like government entitlement programs. It is a multi-step process and not a recipe. It happens to develop differently for each individual.
I cannot foresee all the answers. I can take each step as it unfolds. I must use discernment and not jump at something out of desperation. It is important to learn to make wise choices each day.
For me, first of all, I will endeavor to stop affirming what I do not want. I will stop claiming lack. I will express gratitude each day for the gifts and abundance throughout my life and for the fact that creation is ever continuing to appear, that good is in infinite supply and that I am worthy of abundance. And I will continue to judiciously apply for assorted jobs that may be within my skill set.
